A Record Run for Sporting Spectrum

Sporting Spectrum was a partner in the biggest ever Singapore Marathon on Sunday 2nd December 2007, when it successfully managed the course operations for the event which attracted 40,000 participants.

The overall event consisted of five different events including the marathon, half marathon, 10K, kids dash and 10K wheelchair race and has grown from just 33,000 runners last year - highlighting the growth of community events in the region.

Sporting Spectrum was appointed by the Singapore Sports Council to plan and deliver all activities relating to the course. This included traffic management, course set up, set up of 29 refreshment stations, interaction with medical providers, management of all official vehicles on the course and set up of on course sponsor and technical signage. 

Some interesting statistics from the day inlcude:

  • 1,100 staff, including 981 volunteers deployed from 2am (consisting of 275 route marshals and 706 aid stations crew)
  • 35 buses, 16 course security vehicles and 32 course motorbikes
  • 136,128 bottles of 1.5 litre waters and 4,700 litres of isotonic drinks
  • 1.5 million paper cups
  • 1034 tables
  • 2850 water fillable barricades, 2810 metal barriers and 2250 road cones
  • approximately 1,000 meals (including snack packs, breakfasts and lunches)
  • 78 2-way radios
  • 72 portaloos

Sporting Spectrum Managing Director Chris Robb said that "To be awarded such a significant contract by the peak body of Singapore sport is an endorsement of the growing reputation of Sporting Spectrum in Singapore and the region."

Sheila Sim, Singapore Sports Council’s Senior Sports Events Manager, said "Three months ago The Singapore Sports Council awarded the Route Management of the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 2007 Sporting Spectrum. They were selected because of the agency's experience in managing large scale road events in Singapore and the region. This is the first time the Route Management for the marathon had been put up for tender and we were most satisfied with the professional work Sporting Spectrum carried out for the marathon and the successful outcome for the route due to Sporting Spectrum’s organizational skills and attention to details."
